Glass and plastic containers are commonly used for pharmaceutical containers, and both meet with the objective of protecting and transporting all types of medicine, whether liquid, powder or solid (pill). They also have a great advantage in that they are versatile in size, easy to label and cost effective, making them viable for the industry.
On the other hand, the blister pack also has benefits when packing medicines. It is a system that allows mitigating the exposure to contamination of a product and maximizes its useful life by preventing the entry of moisture. Since the capsules are dispensed individually, users can more easily control their dosing to maintain compliance with their prescriptions.
At first glance, one could observe a bit more advantages in the use of blister packs for the industry since plastic is used to a lesser extent for its manufacture, however there are a series of disadvantages that the industry may or may not opt for when using this way of packaging.
DISADVANTAGES OF THE USE OF THE BLISTER:
• Single use: once the container has been opened, it cannot return to its initial state.
• If it is not manufactured by professionals, it can lead to an opening problem or a bad fit of the product in the container.
• Blister recycling is difficult if it is developed using a heat-sealing technique.
Although it is true, the use of pharmaceutical bottles made of plastic also has a series of disadvantages, this one has one that may be the most important, recycling. Recycling is one of the best-known processes for the recovery of plastic materials. Although there is also chemical recycling (obtaining chemical substances from plastic waste), usually when thinking about recycling, reference is made to mechanical recycling. Mechanical recycling is a physical process in which, through a series of grinding, pressure and temperature, plastic is recovered as raw material for its subsequent transformation.
Market trends to make products more and more ecological and natural are progressively spreading within the industry in general, so that they are much more respectful of the environment. In the sector of packaged products, what is intended is to make packaging increasingly more sustainable, what better than using existing tools.
In conclusion, both containers are very useful for the industry and their use depends on the type of medicine or substance that is to be packaged. There will be some medicines that will be much better to package in blister packs and others, due to their composition, will have to be packaged in plastic pharmaceutical bottles.
